Wolfram’s R&D team have appointed Mark Wolfram, a mathematics professor at Harvard University, to head its Wolfram Science division.

The news comes as the company is in talks with some of the world’s biggest tech companies about the future of its mathematics research, with the likes of Google, Microsoft and Apple all interested in the business.

“We’re pleased to announce the appointment of Mark Wolframs leadership to lead our R&D teams in a number of areas, including mathematics,” said Wolfram chief executive Mark Pincus.

“This is a significant milestone for Wolfram and Wolfram as it will enable us to continue our efforts in the areas of math and artificial intelligence.”

Mark brings a unique breadth of experience and a unique perspective, as he is a long-time mathematical scientist and has served as a senior advisor for a number the world class, including IBM, Google, Facebook, Amazon and Twitter,” he added.

Wolfram has been an adviser to Google on its research in artificial intelligence and deep learning.”

As we move forward, it is crucial that we find new ways to apply the principles of mathematics to make the world a better place, and Mark is uniquely qualified to help us achieve this objective,” Google chief executive Sundar Pichai said.

The UK-based company, which has around a third of the global research spending, will be led by a former Microsoft executive and former Microsoft researcher.

It was also founded by former Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer, and in 2018 bought out its British rivals by making a $US200 billion (£158 billion) takeover bid for it.

Pincus is one of only two people to have led the company in Britain, after it was founded by Ballmer and now its former chief executive.

Wolframs appointment comes after the US-based software giant announced it would hire an additional 1,500 staff at its R&adtech lab to help it create the next generation of cloud computing software, a move that will also help the company develop new ways of using AI and deep neural networks.
